Stanley A. Liberatore

Stanley Anthony Liberatore, a longtime resident of Highland Mills, New York, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 28, 2018, at Care One in Cresskill, New Jersey. He was born April 21, 1928. Stanley was the only son of a family of five of the late Luigi and Maria Guarino Liberatore. The family lived on 213th Street, Bronx, near Immaculate Conception Church. He graduated from Samuel Gompers Industrial High School, and in the year 1950 enlisted in the United States Army as a radio repair technician. Stanley was a combat Korean War veteran; Battery A 140th Division, AAA. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal; the Bronze Star and Silver Star for meritorious achievement in a combat zone; the United Nations Service Medal; and the Army of Occupation Medal of Japan. He endured frigid weather at Chosin Reservoir, Korea. He never spoke of his time in Korea until his very late years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 779 - Woodbury; member of the Woodbury Senior Center; a parishioner of St. Patrick's Church; sponsor to the Ellis Island Museum and Wall of Honor; to the Korean War Memorial in Washington, D.C.; to the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor; and of the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars). Stanley and his to be wife Margaret met in 1953, and married on October 30, 1955, at the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the Bronx, "Little Italy." Their first apartment was on 202nd Street, Grand Concourse. In 1959, they moved to a duplex on Ely Avenue, Bronx. In 1969, Stanley and Margaret moved to Highland Mills, "The Catskills." Stan enjoyed and loved his home in the town of Woodbury. He would sit on the front porch or his favorite chair near the window and enjoy the scenic mountains. He would proudly drive his blue 2002 Lincoln in the town of Woodbury Memorial Day parade. He leaves behind his loving wife, Margaret (Margie); his daughters Marie Liberatore of Tampa, FL, Lisa Folkerts, of Oakland, New Jersey; his son Peter Liberatore and wife Piper of Kennebunkport, Maine; Three beautiful, caring grandchildren Mathew and Nicole Folkerts, and Elsa Liberatore. Pop-Pop will forever be in the family's hearts and will be greatly missed. He was a true gentleman of his era. Pop-Pop could fix anything, he would say, "of course just leave it on my work bench." A private family service was held on Wednesday, January 2, 2019. A Memorial and Burial Service will be scheduled in the spring of 2019.
