Salvatore "Sam" Battiato, 88 years of age and a lifelong resident of Chester, NY passed away on August 4, 2017, in his home surrounded by his loving and devoted family. Sam was the son of the late Joseph Battiato and Anna Battiato Bono. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 66 and half years, Virginia M. Battiato, and their sons; Salvatore Battiato Jr. and wife Sylvia of Longview TX and Port Orange FL, Joseph S. Battiato of Nanuet NY, John Battiato and his wife Peggy of Montgomery, NY, and James Battiato and his partner Sam Van Alstyne of Saint Paul, MN. He is also survived by his three grandchildren Salvatore Battiato III and wife Nicole of Hallsville TX, Jennifer Battiato of Haverstraw NY, Michael Battiato of Wichita, Kansas, and great-granddaughter Mattisen Battiato of Hallsville TX. He is also survived by his brother, Joseph Battiato, and wife, Phyllis, sister-in-law's Christine Battiato and Rose Bono, all of Chester, NY. In addition, he is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his brother Orazio "Russ" Battiato, step-father, Charles Bono and step brother, Mark Bono. Sam was a retired crane operator and a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 825 for 36 years. He was a lifelong parishioner of St. Columba R.C. Church in Chester, NY where he was also an active member of the Chester Golden Age Club. Sam had a love for music that started when his father gave him a guitar at a young age. He taught himself music and also played the accordion. He played music locally and recorded several records. He also had a great love for hunting, gardening, and playing cards. He was meticulous about his cars and loved to keep them clean and polished. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Sam's doctors, Dr. Andrew Hirsch and Dr. Shreyas Baxi, for the kind and loving care they provided. In addition, the family wishes to thank his Hospice nurses Mary and Jennifer for their compassionate care. Visitation will be on Tuesday, August 8, 2017, during the hours of 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Flynn Funeral & Cremation Memorial Centers, Inc., located at 3 Hudson Street, Chester, New York 10918. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 9, 2017, at 10:00 AM in St. Columba R.C. Church, located at 29 High Street, Chester, NY 10918. Burial will immediately follow at St. Columba R.C. Church Cemetery in Chester, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties, Inc., 800 Stony Brook Court, Newburgh, NY 12550. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Thomas F.
