Margaret (Marge) McNelis New Hampton, NY (Formerly of Monroe, NY) Margaret McNelis, 91 years of age and a 53-year resident of the area, passed away on September 1, 2017 at Orange Regional Medical Center. Marge was a telephone operator for Orange Regional Medical Center and a telephone operator / office clerk for Monroe-Woodbury Central School District, for 50 years. The daughter of the late Stephen and Margaret Niven, Marge was born in The Bronx, NY in June of 1926. She was the widow of the late James A. McNelis, who was a veteran of the United States Navy and who had retired from the New York City Police Department. Marge and Jim were co-founders of the Junior Crusaders Football League in Monroe. The loss of our Mom and Grandma, Marge, is immeasurable, but so was the love she left within each of us immeasurable. After serving in the United States Navy Reserve for four years, Marge was honorably discharged in 1954 at Fort Schuyler, Bronx, NY. Marge was a member of the CSEA Retired Teachers Association and had been very active in several youth sports organizations over the years in the Town of Monroe. Survivors include her daughter Deborah and her husband Luther Phil Glover of New Hampton, NY; sons James A. McNelis, Sr. of New Port Richie, FL and Michael S. McNelis of Jacksonville, FL; sister Lorraine and her husband John Ruhl of Elma of NY; niece and goddaughter Janet Ruhl-Petillo of Elma, NY; sister-in-law Nora McNelis of Long Island; brother-in-law Frank Guilfoyle of MD; grandchildren Jeffrey S. Gardner, James A. McNelis III, Emily Haasch and Zachary M. McNelis; many great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Marge was pre-deceased by her husband, James and brother's Stephen Vicen of the State of Washington and Raymond Niven of Belle Harbor, NY and her grandson Christopher Brian Gardner. Visitation will be on Tuesday, September 5, 2017, during the hours of 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Flynn Funeral & Cremation Memorial Centers, Inc., located at 139 Stage Road, Monroe, New York 10950. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 6, 2017, at 10:00 AM in St. Columba R.C. Church located at 29 High Street, Chester, New York. Burial, with Military Honors, will immediately follow at St. Columba R.C. Church Cemetery in Chester, NY. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Marge's name to Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties, Inc., 800 Stony Brook Court, Newburgh, NY 12550.
