John F. Hibler

August 1, 1927 — October 14, 2013

John F. Hibler Jr. of Sugar Loaf passed away on October 14, 2013 in the company of his loving and beloved wife, Ruth Graham Cosgrove Hibler, with whom he shared 11 amazing years of marriage. He was born in San Saba, TX on August 1, 1927, the youngest child of John F. Hibler Sr. and Beulah Pearl Phelps Hibler. From his grandmothers he received both Comanche and Cherokee blood and he was a descendant of Daniel Boone. Through his childhood as a sharecropper in the dust bowl of Oklahoma during the depression he learned to be satisfied by simple things; the love of his family, the company of great friends and a good Mets game. He taught his children the value of honesty and hard work and passed down an appreciation of nature. John proudly served in the US Navy from 1945 to 1949 and moved to Brooklyn afterward with his first wife, Ruth Zollo Hibler who predeceased him. John worked for Genadeen Caterers in Cedarhurst, NY where he rose from dishwasher to captain of the dining room. He also worked at Western Electric in Springfield Gardens working both jobs, seven days a week, for 21 years. At Western Electric he performed factory jobs that some might consider menial or tedious, but each day he strove to do better or accomplish more than the day before. His philosophy was that although those companies wrote his check, he really worked for himself. He gave his best and worked his hardest each day and was paid in self respect and personal satisfaction. He was also predeceased by his siblings; brothers Wilburn Western and Glenn Dayton; sisters Monte May, Emily Laura, Dorothy Lee, Blanche Marie and Flora Isabel and his dog, Dixie. He is survived by his wife Ruth and his children; Marisue and John Traina of Sugar Loaf and John F. Hibler III of Highland as well as his grand children; Dustin and Katrina Traina, Lacey and Kevin McIntyre, Jennifer and Rob Stahli, Lauren and John F. Hibler IV and Kimberly Hibler. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren Ryan, Nathan, Bailee and Evan, and his dog, Magenta. He was a member of the American Legion Post 1167 in Chester for more than 20 years, the New York Telephone Pioneers and the Chester Golden Age Club. He was a faithful parishioner of St. Columba church in Chester. We would like to express special thanks to Father John of St. Columba Church and to his caretakers from Hospice; especially Joanne, Cathy and Esther.
