James Daniel Flynn

d. December 3, 2016

James Daniel Flynn 7/28/1960 - 11/29/2016 James Daniel Flynn Jr., beloved husband and father and successful Wall Street executive, has passed away at 56. Jim Flynn was a deeply caring, loving and dedicated family man who cherished and took very seriously his role as the family leader. Amongst his friends he was affectionately known simply as Flynny, an eponymous nickname symbolic of who he was and for what he stood. Whenever someone would call him by that name or simply refer to him by that name, regardless of tone or mood, the meaning was clear. It could have been an act of kindness, selflessness or charity, a humorous moment or fighting through a tough situation or life experience, it could all be summed up as just being "Flynny". Mr. Flynn grew up in Troy NY, the son of Jim Sr. and Janet. While his origins might be considered modest, he was enriched and guided by a loving family, support structure and work ethic that shaped this young man into a hardworking and dependable man. Awake at the crack of dawn to earn extra money before school, Mr. Flynn would then study late into the night to achieve an A average. A 1978 graduate of Troy High School, Mr. Flynn was a three letter Varsity athlete, playing football, basketball and baseball, acquiring some of his athletic talents from his father, a minor league infielder in the NY Yankees organization. Upon graduation, he attended Union College, Schenectady NY as a scholar athlete and member of Chi Psi fraternity, where he was an active and beloved brother. Like many of his friends at the time, Mr. Flynn sought success and excitement by moving to New York City with an unknown future but spirit for adventure. He found his way into Salomon Brothers, later merged into Citibank, and flourished in a 15 year career at the organization. He married his upstate sweetheart, Elise Mathusa, and together they raised three loving children. Mr. Flynn was deeply dedicated and active in all aspects of family life. After his diagnosis with cancer, he, like everything else he did in life, fought hard to the end, never giving up while always thinking of his friends and especially his family, for whom he so deeply cared. Jim Flynn is survived by his wife Elise, his children Morgan, Caroline and Pauline, his mother and father in-law, Pauline and Parker D. (deceased) Mathusa, his sister and brother in-laws Heather and Michael Tangora, Ashlee and John Church, Bethany Mathusa and Greg Stephan, his sisters and brothers Sharon Comitale, Paula Miner, Andrew and Andrea Flynn and 15 loving nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made in Mr. Flynn's honor to local animal rescues, Pets Alive (www.petsalive.com) and Suruluna Animal Rescue (www.suruluna.org). Visitation will be held on Saturday, December 3, 2016 during the hours of 6:00 to 9:00 PM at Flynn Funeral & Cremation Memorial Centers, Inc., located at 139 Stage Road, Monroe, NY 10950.
