Higinio "Gino" Velez of Sugar Loaf, New York for the past 41 years and a retired New York State Correction Officer with Mid-Orange Correctional Facility, died February 16, 2016 at home under the care of his loving wife. The son of the late Ana Rita Irizarry-Ramos he was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico in the year 1940. Gino proudly served in the United States Army and was Honorably Discharged for his faithful service. Gino found personal satisfaction in fulfilling his military service and also in his occupation as a corrections officer. One of his proudest memories was when his sons followed in his footsteps by joining the military. Gino, Jr. served in the Navy and Matthew in the Air Force. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him. Gino is survived by his devoted wife Virginia Velez at home and their children Gino Velez, Jr. of Las Vegas, NV and Matthew John Velez and his wife Sandra of Las Cruces, New Mexico. He is also survived by his granddaughter Isabella Velez of Las Cruces, New Mexico. His sisters Carmen Falcon and her husband Virgil of Selden, NY, Lourdes Torres of New York City, NY and Ivette Neyra and her husband Dante of Astoria, NY, his sisters-in-law, Alice Ruiz of Warwick, NY and Ana Davis of Cleveland, TX along with many nieces and nephews also survive him. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 19, 2016 during the hours of 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Flynn Funeral & Cremation Memorial Centers, Inc., located at 139 Stage Road, Monroe, New York 10950. A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at 10:00 AM in St. Columba R.C. Church located at 29 High Street, Chester, New York 10918. Burial will follow at Orange County Veteran's Cemetery located at 111 Craigville Road, Goshen, NY 10924, with Military Honors. Memorial contributions in Gino's name to Hospice of Orange & Sullivan County, 800 Stony Brook Court, Newburgh, New York 12550 would be appreciated by the family.
