Eva Amir, three months shy of her 98th birthday, passed away in her home on the shore of Tomahawk Lake in Blooming Grove, NY, on January 13, 2023. She was born on April 15, 1924 in Brno, Czechoslovakia, now located in the Czech Republic.
Eva and her parents and sister escaped from Czechoslovakia during WWII, just prior to the Nazi occupation. They settled in Palestine, where she later served in the British Army as a nurse before Israel gained its independence. Eva met her husband, Simha Amir, in Haifa, Israel, where she gave birth to their first child. The couple relocated to the United States in 1954, first living in Manhattan, where the family grew with the addition of two more daughters.
Eva and Simha lived in Manhattan and purchased a weekend house on Tomahawk Lake in 1958. They soon realized that they spent most of their time wishing they were back at their weekend home. They sold their Manhattan apartment and their weekend house at the Lake and purchased a lakefront house. They were married for 20 years before Simha died at age 45.
Eva finished building a third house situated on the property adjacent to the second lake house. Once finished, this house would be where Eva lived for the next 54 years. She never remarried and raised her three daughters on Tomahawk Lake.
A well-known supporter and advocate for the lake, Eva served on the Tomahawk Lake Board of Directors for many years. When she was younger, she spent time fishing from her dock, swimming, and sailing. Eva was an acknowledged neighborhood matriarch who supported her friends and neighbors throughout her many decades of residence on Tomahawk Lake.
An avid gardener, Eva cultivated many types of annuals and perennials in her signature English gardens. She was a fixture on Shore Drive, often seen walking her dog (she had many over the years) and was very dedicated to bird watching and feeding. She participated in the local Audubon Society bird count every year. She published several essays in the Audubon Society magazine, including one related to managing the squirrels on the bird feeder attached to her kitchen window.
Eva is survived by her three daughters, Leora Amir, Dahlia Valls, and Nina Amir Lacey; her sons in law Richard Amir, Bill Valls, and Ron Lacey, and six grandchildren Erika Amir-Lin, Audrey Amir-Haag, Blake Valls, Brett Valls, Ariel Amir Lacey, Julian Amir Lacey, and two great-grandchildren. She died before she could meet her two great-grandchildren. Additionally, she is survived by her sisters two children and their families, who live in Israel
