Dennis S. Otlowski

January 1, 1947 — April 19, 2016

Dennis Otlowski died on Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at 1:00 A.M. at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, New York. He was 69 years old. The son of Henry and Margaret Otlowski, he was born on January 1, 1947 in Brooklyn, New York. He attended Long Island University in Brooklyn and graduated with a degree in physical education. Dennis had a long career as a gym teacher and grade advisor at the High School of Music and Art/Laguardia High School in New York City. He coached the Boys' Basketball team, and led the first co-ed tennis team to the championship in Manhattan in 1981. He was known by all the students as Mr. O, and was beloved by all. He retired on disability in 1993 and battled cancer successfully for 22 years. The after-effects of radiation therapy resulted in a steady decline over the period of 20 years, but Dennis faced each new health challenge with strength, dignity, and a sense of humor. Denny, as he is affectionately known, was a prolific artist who worked in all types of media: oil, acrylic, pen and ink, and computer art. His work was last displayed at the Art Center in Central Valley. Some of his other interests include birding, travel, sports, time at the casinos, fishing, and nature conservation. He leaves his wife of 23 years, Elvy Stepinoff, of Monroe, NY; his daughters Laurie and Joan; his step-children, Jessica and Matthew Weiskopf, and Matthew's wife, Jamie Greiff. He was a beloved G-pa to Finley. Dennis was pre-deceased by his parents, and his sister, Donna Liscinski. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Orange County Audubon Society.
